The goal for some supercar manufacturers is to knock the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport down a peg. The Koenisegg Agera R, which set some world speed records recently, is one that might do it.

Know the power of the dark side

It takes less than 30 seconds to pour a cup of coffee, add sugar and maybe some cream, stir it and blow on the liquid. That, according to AutoWeek, is about how long it takes the Koenigsegg Agera R to go from 0 to 200 miles per hour and back to 0.

Call Guinness

The Swedish supercar recently set six Guinness records for a two-seat production car. The Agera R now holds the record for going from 0 to 200 mph to 0, in 24.96 seconds. The car also set records for going from 0 to 300 kilometers per hour or about 186 miles per hour, according to Automobile Magazine, in 14.53 seconds, and from 0 to 200 miles per hour in 17.68 seconds.

The car also holds records for going from 0 to 300 kph to 0, which it did in 21.19 seconds, and from going 300 kph to 0 and 200 mph to 0 in 6.66 seconds and 7.28 seconds, respectively.

Still after the big one

One record stands tall above almost all others: top speed. That record belongs to the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which reached 267.85 miles per hour, according to Top Speed. There are some cars that may well top the record set by the 1,200-horsepower beast that was unleashed by Volkswagen’s subsidiary.

The Agera R may be capable, as the twin-turbo 5.0-liter V-8 produces 1,100 horsepower and is reputedly capable of 275 miles per hour, though it isn’t verified yet.

The Yanks are coming

Cars from two small American firms may be capable of knocking Bugatti of its perch. The Hennessey Venom GT Spyder, according to Automobile Magazine, might be up to the task. The Venom, a modified Lotus Elise, has a 6.2-liter LS9 engine, the V-8 in the Corvette ZR1. In the Corvette ZR1, the LS9 produces more than 600 horsepower, but the version put in the Venom GT Spyder is re-tuned and turbocharged to 1,200 horsepower. It’s also a convertible. Hennessey believes it to be capable of 275 miles per hour.

The upcoming Tuatara by Shelby Super Cars is also a contender, according to Top Speed. Shelby Super Cars snatched the top speed record from the original Veyron with the SSC Ultimate Aero, which Bugatti topped again with the Super Sport. The new Tuatara packs a 6.8-liter, 1,350 horsepower twin-turbo V-8. It hasn’t reached full production and it hasn’t set any new records, yet.

However, Bugatti’s CEO, Wolfgang Durheimer, has vowed Bugatti will “strike back” against any upstarts looking to take the record from them.
