Mayor Bloomberg wants 10,000 new EV charging stations by 2020

In his 12th and final State of the City address, New York City Mayor Bloomberg said he wants the city to be a leader in clean technology. As part of that effort, he wants to add 10,000 new electric vehicle charging stations to the city over the next seven years.

What Mayor Bloomberg did on Valentine’s Day

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in his Valentine’s Day speech that he wants to “make New York City a national leader in another new technology: electric vehicles.” Part of that effort will be to grown its infrastructure to support the vehicles.

The executive director of the Green Parking Council, Paul Wessel, applauded the move. He said, “Providing parking facilities with Level II EV charging is a critical way to foster the rapid development of electric vehicles. Every month, the number of EV drivers continues to increase. … In 2012 alone, more than 50,000 new electric vehicles were sold in the United States.”

Curbside fast charging stations

One way Mayor Bloomberg hopes to do that is with a pilot program that would install two curbside fast charging stations that are capable of charging a car in 30 minutes, instead of the normal eight hours. One day, conceivably, New Yorkers could park, plug in, have lunch or pick up a few things, and return to a fully-charged vehicle.

10,000 EV parking spaces

Additionally, the Mayor wants to create 10,000 parking spaces, wired to charge electric vehicles, by the end of 2019. There are many challenges to doing that. It is an effort that would require changing existing codes.

Bloomberg said, “We’ll work with the City Council to amend the Building Code so that up to 20 percent of all new public parking spaces in private developments will be wired and ready for electric vehicles, creating up to 10,000 parking spots for electric vehicles over the next seven years.”

Electrifying the fleet

The mayor also said he would add 50 more EVs to the city’s fleet. Six of those will be electric taxicabs. That would be a small boost toward Bloomberg’s “goal of making one-third of our taxi fleet electric by 2020.”

New York has become the east coast’s electric vehicle leader. At this time, there are 100 charging stations available to the public. Another 120 are for the city’s growing fleet of EVs. Bloomberg wants to add 30 more stations for city vehicles.

Additional green efforts

Bloomberg also called for a ban on Styrofoam packaging in the city’s shops and eateries, as well as an intensification of its recycling efforts.
